The Sconce Saga

September 20, 2017 / Andria's House, Design / Andria

Several months ago I found some vintage brass sconces at an auction.  They were/are a complete dream!  I loved them so much that I didn’t care if I had more than one set of sconces in the house.  I was determined to get these.  Thankfully, I won the bid.  When I got them home, I held them up next to the mirror and they seemed a bit small and looked pretty difficult to hang.

I cut out some poster board to the size of the sconces and taped them to one side of the mirror, thinking that I could put them both on one side to remedy my problem of them being too small.  But, I could never find anything to hang on the other side that would balance it out. I was really, really disappointed and convinced myself that they just weren’t going to work.

Here’s a pic of one of the sconces.

I had Paige hold them up next to the mirror so that I could stand back and decide if I was ok with the size.  She held them up several times, but I was still indecisive.

Like I said, several months passed, and I just needed to either try them out on the wall or find them a new home.  Trying them out on the wall meant wall anchors, hammering, drilling, and just making sure that the holes were straight.  Each sconce has two holes in the back for hanging, which in my mind is a nightmare because you have to be super precise in measuring for your holes.  Anyhoo…I am also notoriously bad at measuring and have put many, many a hole in a wall and still have to patch them up.  So, that’s why many months had passed….because I’m a wimp.

So today, I decided not to be a wimp anymore and just get ‘er done (as Cheryl would say) and get those sconces up on the wall and just hope that I liked the size of them next to the mirror.

I made a mess.

But, guess what?  I successfully hung the first sconce!  And it’s done properly with wall anchors and I made sure it was level.

And guess what again?  I hung the next sconce without incident and it’s level and pretty perfect!

I actually surprised myself when I decided that they weren’t too small after all!  All of those wasted months for nothing!

If you’ve noticed the rug on the floor, I decided to add that to break up the beige.  We all know I got 50 Shades of Beige all up in this house.  Sheesh.

I really love how the rug highlights the base of my coffee table.  And those little branches there are fake…from Ikea!  Only $3.99 a piece.  Yass!

I’m so glad I decided to just get this done because I am looooving these sconces and the rug.

So, if you have been dragging your feet on a project, even one this small…just get ‘er done.  Seriously.  You’ll be glad you did.

Maybe pop some color with pillows and a coffee table collectible to give the room some WOW. Nice job!
