Fixer Upper Patio Furniture

July 5, 2017 / Andria's House, Projects / Andria

So, I know I’ve posted a couple of times about patio furniture…couches, chairs, dining sets, etc.  Well, now that the patio is complete (post about that coming soon!), it’s time to give a furniture status update!

First, I need to back up a couple of weeks.  Father’s Day evening, our cat, Ace, jumped down off of the refrigerator, lost his footing, and broke his leg.  It was traumatic, both for the cat and for our check book.  This break wasn’t one that could be healed with a cast.  Unfortunately, he needed surgery!  Ugh.

Obviously, vet surgery costs are nothing to laugh at.  Unless it’s that diabolical laugh where you’re almost crying and/or going insane.  Maybe we are a little insane because everyone we told gave us that same look like, “you’re going to go through with surgery for a cat???”  Well, most of you know what you would do for your little fur babies and we feel the same!

Back to the furniture…so, in order to off-set some of our vet expenses, we decided only to buy patio furniture for the area around the fire pit, and keep the dining set that we have.  Hopefully, next summer we can find something else that we like better.

Our set was handed down to us from Greg’s parents.  It’s a very nice set, but the paint had faded and it was absolutely filthy!

#1.  Clean It Up!

First things first, I had to clean them.  I mean, they had green stuff growing on them.  Nasty!

I broke out the power washer and went to work.  My kids even helped.  Quinne had to get in on the action, but could barely handle it!

#2.  Tape It Off!

After power washing the table and chairs, I went to work taping off the material on the seats and backs.  I used a roll of brown builder’s paper and painter’s tape.

I broke this portion of the project up into 3 days, just so I wouldn’t get overwhelmed or burnt out.  I taped all of the chairs one day, painted the chairs the next day, then taped and painted the table on the third day.  Breaking the project up into manageable pieces helped me so much!

#3.  Spray All The Things!!!

When I began the painting process, everything was going along according to plan.  However, when I saw the finished product after the paint had dried, I was a little disappointed because the paint dried darker (and brighter!) than I wanted.  So, here’s my tip and something that I will do in the future when working with spray paint…test it out first!!

The color isn’t horrible, but I was just looking for something closer to the original pre-faded color.  This color is called Sage from Ace Hardware, and although it’s lovely, I kind of feel like one side of our patio belongs in Fort Lauderdale.  You know what I mean, right?  Pink flamingos and bright yellow umbrellas.

I’m still getting used to the color, but hey…I only have to live with it for another year and its fresh and clean, so I’m taking it as a win!

Here’s the finished set.

Now, I need help deciding if I should try to subdue the color by getting an off-white umbrella, or if a more colorful umbrella would detract from the brightness of the chairs.  Please comment below!  I’d love to get your opinions!
