Andria’s post yesterday about her trip to Florida inspired me to spend more time at the beach. Luckily, the beaches aren’t too far from us, and our neighbor has a pool. Score! However, until earlier this year, I hadn’t bought myself a new swimsuit since shortly after Wade was born (almost six years ago.) Actually, one of the swimsuit bottoms I wore until last year (when the butt become so worn out it was practically see through) was from college. Granted, these swimsuits were high quality – from Athleta and J. Crew. But seriously, it’s embarrassing for me to even write this. Maybe it just shows that I don’t swim nearly enough if they’ve last me this long.
Before a trip to Sedona earlier this year where I was planning to spend a good amount of the weekend in the hot tub, with a glass of wine, while looking at the Sedona mountains, I bought myself a beautiful new J. Crew suit that I love. But, the style is not conducive for playing with rowdy boys, lugging around beach equipment, digging a moat (see video reference below), and not having to constantly worry that the ladies will fall out if I bend over.
I’ve decided I need a new swimsuit that will stand up to all the swimming, throwing boys around, and everything else moms do at a beach and pool. So, I’ve rounded up my ten favorites I’ve found in my online perusing. They’re at varying price points – from $30 to over $100. All of them except one are one pieces. I’ve been a two piece girl since high school, but I’m loving the one piece trend that’s so hot right now. Hopefully you can find one you’d like to wear throughout the summer, too!
Before you dive in, you should watch this video to give you the courage needed to try these suckers on. These ladies are hilarious!
Without further ado…
J. Crew Braided Deep-V One Piece
J. Crew has always been a go-to for swimsuits. They have really good designs and are super high quality. Sure, they can be expensive, but J. Crew also has regular sales going on (right now there’s an extra 30% off sale items!), so you can usually get a good deal. The swimsuit I bought for Sedona was only $30! I love the red stripes on this one, and it looks like just the right amount of a plunge to keep it sexy, but not x-rated.
Gap Stripe One-Piece
I guess I like my swimsuits in stripes. You can’t beat the classic navy stripe on this one. And, it’s got a nice x back to keep the suit in place while you’re running around after the kids (or shifting positions on your beach chair.)
American Eagle Super Scoop One Piece
This one is almost in the “I Swimsuit Season So Hard” category with the cut outs. But, I love the color and design. And, it’s only $30 right now!
Athleta Shirrendipity Halter Tankini
This is the swimsuit I bought shortly after Wade was born, and it has held up like a champ. It’s super comfortable, everything stays where it needs to stay, and the rouching makes everybody look good. #rouchingismyjam I highly recommend this tankini for a standard, wear everywhere swimsuit. I love this blue color, too.
Athleta Aqualuxe Print Molded One Piece
This has such a simple cut, but the print and sweetheart neckline put it over the top. Add a straw hat and some cute, supportive sandals and you’ll be the best dressed mom at the beach/pool.
Old Navy Halter Underwire One Piece
I like the classic halter design with the cute, tropical print.
Women’s Shirred Halter One Piece
I’m digging the retro cut and polka dots on this one. This same style comes in other fabrics – a couple solids and a cute striped version. I can’t tell if the sweetheart neckline would look awkward or not…good thing Target has free shipping and returns on swimsuits so I can find out!
Target Solid X-Back One Piece
Here’s another classic v-neck in the royal blue color I love. I also really like the strappy detailing on the back.
Anthropologie Siyu Eden Surplice One Piece
The cut on this one is so classic, and the print just puts it over the top. Not so sure how the neckline would hold up for and active day with the boys, but it’s so beautiful, that might not matter. It also comes in a navy print that is equally drool worthy.
Anthropologie Space Ruched Side One Piece
This one is really similar to the J. Crew suit I bought for Sedona, and almost the same color. Again, rouching makes everything amazing, and the top looks super practical and supportive without being dowdy.
So, there they are! Now I just need to decide and pull the trigger. The days are definitely getting hotter around here, and I’m going to want to be in the water soon. Even if it’s in our backyard kiddie pool.
Which one is your favorite? What’s your go-to store for swimsuits?
I just bought this one.

I haven’t received it yet, but I am optimistic. I have found it quite difficult to find a flattering one piece, but at 42 I’m thinking it may be time to lay off the bikinis…or the beer. I’m thinking I can’t keep going with both. 😉
Bonus, this suit is actually mostly made from recycled materials. Cute and good for the environment.
